Carvana is bigger than us and faster to a number. There are still cars it is the wrong home for. Here is the real difference, with Carvana’s terms quoted from its own published selling pages.
Neither of us is the right answer for every car. The honest split is roughly this.
If you are not sure which bucket you are in, get both numbers. Carvana’s offer costs you nothing and holds for seven days, which is plenty of time to see what we say. We would rather you took the higher number than felt rushed into ours.
We have the same comparison for CarMax, and a guide to the four different numbers a car is worth.
| Carvana | Vorlex Motors | |
|---|---|---|
| Time to an offer | About 2 minutes, instantly online | Within 24 hours, in writing |
| How the number is produced | Automated valuation from the details you enter, plus pricing-guide and market data | A person prices the car from a guided photo set you shoot |
| Offer held for | 7 days | The number in your written offer is what you are paid on collection |
| Getting the car to the buyer | Drop-off at a hub or vending machine is free; pickup is a paid service where offered, priced by location | Free collection anywhere in California, by an insured carrier we schedule and pay for |
| When you are paid | At the appointment, by printed check or ACH (Carvana says ACH normally takes 2–5 business days) | On collection |
| Loan payoff | Handled | Handled — we contact your lender, pay them directly, you keep the difference |
| Cars that do not run | Generally outside the instant-offer model | Routed to a buy partner, free towing, paid on collection |
| Scale | National, thousands of staff, locations in most metros | A small California operation based in San Jose |

Everything above is logistics. This part is the money.
Carvana’s offer is generated from what you tell it. You enter the plate or VIN, answer questions about mileage, condition and features, and the system returns a price. Carvana is clear about what happens next: it runs automated checks, photo reviews and an inspection at the appointment, and if it finds a mismatch between the car and what you submitted, it generates an updated offer.
That is a reasonable system, and worth saying plainly: if you describe your car accurately, Carvana says the offer will not change. The problem is not dishonesty. It is that most people are not appraisers. “Good condition” means something different to the person who has driven the car for six years than it does to the person buying it. Curb rash, a cloudy headlight, a seat bolster that has given up, a repaint on one panel — these are invisible in a drop-down menu and extremely visible in person.
So the risk with an instant offer is not that it is low. It is that it is provisional, and you find out it was provisional on the day someone is standing in your driveway with a transporter, which is the worst possible moment to start negotiating.
We put the photos first for that reason. You shoot a guided set — walkaround, wheels, interior, VIN plate, a video with the engine running — and the number comes back after someone has looked at the car. It takes longer than two minutes. In exchange, the number has already seen the curb rash.
Carvana offers free drop-off to everyone at a hub or vending machine, and a paid pickup service in locations where it runs, priced by where you are. If a hub is twenty minutes away and you have someone to follow you, that is a non-issue — take the free drop-off.
It is a real issue if you are in Bakersfield, Redding or the far end of the Central Valley, where the nearest hub is a serious drive and the pickup fee is priced accordingly. The fee is not deducted from the offer, so it does not show up in the number you compare — but it comes out of the same pocket.
We collect anywhere in California at no cost, with an insured transport carrier that we schedule and pay for. Nothing is deducted from your offer for transport, and distance affects timing, not the number. That is the single clearest advantage we have, and it is worth the most to the people furthest from a major metro.
A comparison page where the author wins every row is an advertisement, so here is the other side of it.
Speed. Two minutes against 24 hours is not close. If you need a number tonight to decide something, Carvana will give you one and we will not.
Clean late-model cars. Carvana retails the cars it buys, which means on a tidy three-year-old Camry or RAV4 it is bidding against its own retail margin rather than a wholesale one. That is a strong position, and on that specific kind of car it is frequently the highest number in the market. We will tell you if we think that is your situation.
Scale and recourse. Carvana is a public company with a national footprint and a formal complaints process. We are a small California business. You should weigh that, and you should check what people say about both of us before you hand over a title.
No photo homework. Our process asks you to spend fifteen minutes shooting a car. Some people would rather not, and that is a fair reason to go elsewhere.
When a car is not a good fit for us, we say so and route it to a buy partner whose network competes specifically on that kind of vehicle — non-runners, branded titles, heavy damage, very high mileage. You get an instant online offer, free towing and payment on collection, and we are upfront that it is a different company.
An instant-offer platform built on retail inventory does not have that option. It either buys the car at a retail-driven price or it declines, and a decline leaves you back at the beginning. We would rather hand you to someone who will pay more than pretend we are the right answer.
One written offer, within 24 hours. No fees, no obligation, and it is the same number when the truck arrives. Carvana’s offer holds for seven days — there is no reason not to have both.
Get My Offer →It depends on the car. Carvana is usually the stronger route for a clean, late-model, mainstream vehicle with no accident history, because its pricing model is built on exactly that kind of inventory and it gives you a number in about two minutes. Vorlex tends to be the better route when the car needs a human to look at it — higher mileage, cosmetic damage, an unusual trim, a modified vehicle, or anything a form cannot describe properly. Getting both numbers costs you nothing.
Yes, in the markets where pickup is offered. Carvana's own selling FAQ states that drop-off at a Carvana hub or vending machine is free to everyone, and that pickup is a paid service priced by location. Vorlex collects anywhere in California at no cost and deducts nothing from your offer for transport. (Carvana terms verified 11 October 2026 — confirm current pricing on carvana.com before you book.)
Carvana holds its offer for 7 days and states that the offer will not change if the information you provided accurately reflects the vehicle. Vorlex gives you a written number within 24 hours of receiving your photos, and that number is what you are paid on collection.
Carvana pays at the pickup or drop-off appointment, either by printed check handed to you or by ACH, which it says normally takes 2–5 business days to land. Vorlex pays on collection. If there is a loan on the car, both routes have to settle the lender first, which adds time in either case.
Because the photos are how the offer gets made. Carvana generates an instant number from the details you type in and then verifies the car at the appointment. Vorlex works the other way round: you send a guided set of shots first, a person prices the actual car, and the number arrives in writing within 24 hours. The trade-off is honest — Carvana is faster to a number, Vorlex's number has already seen the car.
Generally no. Carvana's instant-offer model is built around retail-ready vehicles. If your car is a non-runner, has significant mechanical trouble, or carries a branded title, Vorlex routes it to a buy partner whose network competes specifically on those vehicles, with free towing and payment on collection.
No. Carvana is an independent company with no relationship to Vorlex Motors. This page is our own comparison, written from Carvana's publicly published selling terms.
