Cash For Cars Los Angeles — It Usually Comes Down To One Part

Los Angeles has more cash-for-cars buyers than anywhere in the country, which sounds like competition and often is not. Two things decide what you actually get, and one of them is bolted under the car.

The converter The state payment Many buyers, little competition Updated October 2026

The converter is the swing factor, and in LA it is often already gone

A catalytic converter is priced on its platinum, palladium and rhodium content — not by weight — with published values running from around $50 to over $1,200 for a single unit.

That makes it routinely the most valuable single part on an otherwise finished car, and it is why two identical-looking cars in the same driveway can be hundreds of dollars apart.

California is the epicenter of converter theft, and the Toyota Prius is the single most targeted vehicle in the state. If yours was taken, say so when you request the quote, not when the truck arrives. The number will be lower and it will also be the real number — and a quote built on a disclosure cannot be cut for that reason later. That is the entire defense against the complaint that dominates this category.

California will pay you $1,350 to retire it, with no income test

California’s Bureau of Automotive Repair raised its vehicle-retirement payments on 1 January 2025: $1,350 for consumers who do not meet income requirements, and up to $2,000 for those who do. Repair assistance went to $1,450 for 1996-and-newer vehicles and $1,100 for 1995-and-older. BAR also now allows retirement even if the car passes its Smog Check, and repair assistance more than once for the same vehicle.

Set that against roughly $250 to $750 for a whole junk car from a licensed buyer. For a large share of end-of-life cars in Los Angeles, the state is the better offer — and it is especially the better offer if the converter is missing, because the state payment does not care and a scrap buyer very much does.

It is slower, eligibility rules apply, funding is annual, and the car goes to a state-contracted dismantler. Check it anyway, before you accept anything from us or anyone else.

California does not let a junk car go without a title at any age

Several states release the title requirement once a vehicle is old enough or cheap enough. California is not one of them.

Virginia lets a licensed recycler demolish a car at 10 model years. Tennessee and Arizona draw the line at 12. Georgia asks nothing at all for anything built before 1986. California has no equivalent, which means the paperwork is the gate here in a way it is not elsewhere — and it is the single most common reason a California junk sale stalls.

If yours is lost, that is a solvable and usually cheap problem rather than a dead end. The form is REG 227, and the traps — the two-model-year rule, the notarized release on older payoffs — are written up on our California lost title page.

Many buyers is not the same as competition

The count of cash-for-cars operators in Los Angeles is genuinely enormous. It does not follow that they bid against each other for your car, because they never see each other’s numbers. You call one, you get one number, you decide.

Competition only exists if you create it, which means getting three written quotes on an identical, pessimistic description of the car before you accept any of them. That is it. That is the whole technique, and in a market this dense it is worth more here than almost anywhere.

Where we fit

Genuine scrap goes to an instant-offer partner who makes a firm number and collects, and we are paid a referral commission when that sale completes.

But Los Angeles produces a lot of cars that get called junk and are not. A non-running car with a good drivetrain, a cosmetically wrecked car, a car with one expensive fault — those have real buyers who recondition and retail, and a scrap quote is the wrong instrument. Tell us about it and we will say which one you have.

Common questions

How much is a junk car worth in Los Angeles?

Published 2026 estimates put a whole car at roughly $250 to $750 from a licensed buyer once an intact catalytic converter and reusable parts are counted. The converter is the largest single variable and can move that by hundreds either way. California's vehicle retirement payment of $1,350 with no income test is the number to compare against.

My catalytic converter was stolen. Is the car still worth anything?

Yes, but materially less, because the converter is often the most valuable single part on an end-of-life car and is priced on precious-metal content rather than weight. Disclose it when you request the quote. A number built on that disclosure cannot be reduced for that reason when the truck arrives, which is the most common complaint in this category.

Does California pay more than a junk buyer?

Often, for a genuine end-of-life car. The Bureau of Automotive Repair pays $1,350 to retire a vehicle with no income test and up to $2,000 for income-eligible consumers, following increases effective 1 January 2025. Eligibility and annual funding apply. Confirm at bar.ca.gov/cap.

Can I sell a car in Los Angeles without a title?

California has no age or value exemption releasing the title requirement, unlike several other states. The route is a duplicate on form REG 227, with the two-model-year rule and the notarized lien release on older payoffs being the usual complications.

There are so many buyers here. Does that mean better prices?

Not automatically. A dense market does not create competition if no buyer sees another's number, which is the normal situation. Competition only exists if you create it by collecting several written quotes on an identical description before accepting any of them.
