Cash For Cars Fresno — Distance Is Already In Your Number

Fresno sits between two of the largest vehicle markets in America and is not especially close to either. That geography shows up in every quote you will be given, usually without anyone mentioning it.

Why Valley quotes differ The state payment Farm and fleet vehicles Updated October 2026

The tow is in the offer, and in the Valley the tow is longer

Free towing is free to you. It is not costless, and it is priced into the number before anyone says it out loud.

Fresno County is physically enormous, and a buyer quoting a car in Fresno is pricing a flatbed that may be covering real distance to a yard, a dismantler or a processor. That is a large part of why two quotes on the same car differ by more here than they would in a dense city, and it is market mechanics rather than anybody cheating.

The practical consequence: ask every buyer whether towing is included in or deducted from the figure they just gave you, and ask where the car is actually going. A buyer with an end market nearby can pay more than a bigger name further out.

California will pay $1,350 to retire it, which may be the whole answer

California’s Bureau of Automotive Repair raised its vehicle-retirement payments on 1 January 2025: $1,350 for consumers who do not meet income requirements, and up to $2,000 for those who do. Repair assistance went to $1,450 for 1996-and-newer vehicles and $1,100 for 1995-and-older. BAR also now allows retirement even if the car passes its Smog Check, and repair assistance more than once for the same vehicle.

Against roughly $250 to $750 for a whole junk car from a licensed buyer, the state payment wins outright for a lot of Valley cars — and it is unaffected by the tow distance that erodes a commercial offer here.

Slower, eligibility rules, annual funding, and the car goes to a state-contracted dismantler. Still worth ten minutes before you accept anything.

California does not let a junk car go without a title at any age

Several states release the title requirement once a vehicle is old enough or cheap enough. California is not one of them.

Virginia lets a licensed recycler demolish a car at 10 model years. Tennessee and Arizona draw the line at 12. Georgia asks nothing at all for anything built before 1986. California has no equivalent, which means the paperwork is the gate here in a way it is not elsewhere — and it is the single most common reason a California junk sale stalls.

If yours is lost, that is a solvable and usually cheap problem rather than a dead end. The form is REG 227, and the traps — the two-model-year rule, the notarized release on older payoffs — are written up on our California lost title page.

Farm, fleet and work vehicles are their own question

The Valley produces a particular kind of end-of-life vehicle: high-hour work trucks, farm-use pickups, and ex-fleet vans that were maintained to a schedule rather than to a standard.

These get undervalued by generic junk quoting for a specific reason — a scrap price is set by weight and a converter, and it ignores a drivetrain that still works. A work truck that runs has buyers who want it as a work truck, and that is a different market with different numbers.

If it starts and moves under its own power, get a real valuation before you take a scrap number for it.

Where we fit

Genuine scrap goes to an instant-offer partner, and we are paid a referral commission when that sale completes. We would rather tell you that up front.

Where we earn anything worth having is the vehicle that is not actually finished. Tell us what it is and whether it runs, and we will tell you which market it belongs in — including when that means you should not use us.

Common questions

Why are cash offers lower in Fresno than in Los Angeles?

Usually distance. Towing is priced into every offer whether or not it is itemized, and Central Valley pickups often cover more ground to reach a yard, dismantler or processor. Ask each buyer whether towing is included in or deducted from the figure quoted, and where the car is going.

Does California pay you to scrap a car?

Yes. The Bureau of Automotive Repair's Consumer Assistance Program pays $1,350 to retire a vehicle with no income test and up to $2,000 for income-eligible consumers, after increases effective 1 January 2025. Eligibility rules and annual funding apply. Confirm current figures at bar.ca.gov/cap.

My work truck still runs but it is rough. Is it a junk car?

Probably not. A scrap price is set by weight and the catalytic converter and ignores a working drivetrain entirely. A truck that starts and moves has buyers who want it as a truck, which is a different market with different numbers. Get a real valuation before accepting a scrap quote.

Can I sell a junk car in Fresno without a title?

California has no age or value exemption that releases the title requirement, unlike Virginia at 10 model years or Georgia for pre-1986 vehicles. The route is a duplicate on form REG 227.

How many quotes should I get?

Three, described identically and pessimistically to each buyer, or you are not comparing the same car. Spread is wider here than in a dense metro because of tow distance, which makes shopping the quote worth more in the Valley than it is in a city.
