Selling a Car in Denver — Hail Is the Whole Story

A hail-damaged car looks ruined and drives fine. That gap between how it looks and what it is decides what you get for it, and almost every instant-offer site gets it wrong.

The car that looks worse than it is

Denver gets hit, repeatedly. Insurers logged hail events across the metro in June 2025 — Larimer, Weld, Boulder, Adams and Denver counties — and again in June 2026 across Weld, Boulder, Broomfield, Jefferson, Arapahoe and Denver.

The 2017 storm remains the benchmark: widely reported as Colorado's costliest insured catastrophe at around $2.3 billion, with more than 150,000 auto claims. That figure comes from secondary reporting rather than an insurer, so treat the precise number loosely — the scale is not in doubt.

Here is what matters when you sell. A hail-dimpled car is cosmetically destroyed and mechanically untouched. Engine, transmission, interior, tyres: all fine. An algorithm that prices from photographs sees a wrecked car. A buyer who understands paintless dent repair sees a cheap one.

Why instant offers do badly on hail cars

Carvana and CarMax both retail cars to consumers off a lot or a website. A panel full of dents cannot go on that lot without bodywork, so the offer absorbs a full repair cost whether or not the repair is worth doing.

The buyers who pay properly for hail cars are the ones who either specialise in paintless dent repair or do not care about cosmetics at all. They are not the companies advertising at you.

Do not fix it first. This is the most expensive mistake Denver sellers make. You pay retail for the repair, the buyer values it at trade, and you lose the difference. Photograph the dents honestly and let it be priced in.

If you took an insurance payout

Plenty of Denver drivers were paid out for hail and never repaired the car. That is entirely legitimate, and it is worth being straight about it with a buyer.

What matters is whether the payout resulted in a branded title. A cosmetic hail claim usually does not. A total-loss settlement can. If the title has been branded, that changes the buyer pool substantially — see our guide to selling a car declared a total loss, which covers the mechanics even though it is written for California.

Front Range emissions, and what it actually costs

Gasoline vehicles in the metro Denver and Front Range area need an emissions inspection. The programme covers all or part of nine counties: Adams, Arapahoe, Boulder, Broomfield, Denver, Douglas, Jefferson, Larimer and Weld.

One honest caveat: we could not confirm from state guidance whether a current inspection is specifically required to complete a private sale, as opposed to registration. Confirm with CDPHE or the Colorado DMV rather than taking our word for it. Selling to a licensed dealer generally sidesteps the question either way.

The altitude thing, briefly

Denver cars live at elevation, which is mostly irrelevant to value with two exceptions worth knowing.

Turbocharged engines are worked harder at altitude than at sea level. And a car that has spent its life on I-70 going over the passes has done harder miles than the odometer suggests — brakes and transmissions especially. Neither is a dealbreaker. Both are things a careful buyer will ask about, so having a straight answer helps.

Common questions

Should I repair hail damage before selling my car?

Usually not. You pay retail for the repair and the buyer values the car at trade, so you lose the difference. The exception is a car that is otherwise immaculate and close to retail-ready, where bodywork might pay for itself. Get a number both ways before committing.

Will a dealer buy a hail-damaged car in Denver?

Yes, and some want them specifically. Buyers who do paintless dent repair in volume, or who wholesale rather than retail, price hail cars far better than an instant-offer algorithm that assumes full bodywork.

Does hail damage brand the title?

A cosmetic hail claim usually does not. A total-loss settlement can. Check the title itself rather than assuming, because a branded title changes the buyer pool and the price significantly.

Do I need an emissions test to sell my car in Denver?

Gasoline vehicles in the nine-county Front Range area are subject to the inspection programme, and the fee rose to $35 on 2 March 2026. Whether a current certificate is specifically required to complete a sale rather than a registration is worth confirming with CDPHE — selling to a licensed dealer generally avoids the issue.

What is my car worth in Denver?

Hail history, mileage and condition move it more than the model year does. Our value check prices against live listings near your ZIP and subtracts what a dealer has to make.
